Day 27 - Miss Information About Wordpress and Adsense

I came across this question and answer today and think it is worth noting that not everything you are told on the web is accurate. In response to this blogger's question about placing Adsense on a Wordpress blog, "Tony" failed to note that the terms of service for a blog on Wordpress.com prohibit placing Adsense on a blog that is hosted on their free service. If a blogger wants to run Adsense or affiliate ads on their blog they need to host their blog elsewhere. Wordpress offers free hosting but specifies that this service is not for commercial use.

This assumes that you have an adsense account. If you do not, the first thing you need to do is to get one.

There are a few ways to use adsense and other such services with WordPress, though not all of them may apply to those hosted on wordpress.com.

1. Create an adsense block with your adsense account
2. Use a theme with a dynamic sidebar ( most good themes have them )
3. Add a “Text/html” widget to your sidebar
- You can do this in “Appearance” – “Widgets”
4. Add your adsense block to your widget and it will be displayed there

Note that the above only works well for column type adsense banners.

Another way:
1. Choose a good adsense theme such as prosense
2. Add adsense blocks in the adsense pages for the theme
- You can do this in “Appearance” – “Editor” by finding the adsense block pieces and editing them.

Another way:
1. Edit your theme files and add adsense blocks where you want them to display.

There are exceptions made to this Wordpress Advertising restriction and you can read more about why and for whom these are made on the Wordpress page entitled Advertising.
